Plenty of people are asking us about using a UPS as an inverter for use in a wind/solar/water power project they are building. We are listing these units in a minimal state so that we can sell them as cheaply as possible and also its best to start with the simplest atomic items and engineer from there forwards.
This Model is fanless. I would recommend adding fans if using as a full tim inverter. As it uses a 24V battery system this is easy - you can just hook a DC fan to the cell system. When used as a UPS the fans are not neccesary as the cell bank is much smaller than most DIY systems and therefore the invertion duty cycle likewise lower.
In these pictures you can see us testing the UPS when using it as an inverter. We used 2x Ritar 18AH EV series cells. We directly connected the battery negative lead to the chassis and the positive to the FET heat sinks, but it would be more normal to connect to the yellow battery connector, or cut the wires leading to this connector and splicing your DC system there. We have tried to show many shots of the internals and the rig we were testing here. We have also recorded a short video showing a quick demo:
Anyway these are cheap, reliable and a good unit for testing and using in DIY power systems. We will list the original spec below but I recommend leaving a margin on the power drawn from the UPS in order to extend lifespan. They are not an XL UPS so I'd target running at up to 60-70% of max power nominally. This Model is fanless. I would recommend adding fans if using as a full time inverter. As we are selling these for modification and projects we are not providing a warranty - and must stress that any electrical project should only be undertaken if the user is happy with their proficiency to safely tackle the project. The good news is the DC system is fairly low voltage. The built in charger (if used) is around 5 Amps - but most people will be using a charge system that is wind or solar. The Wide DC voltage range gives flexibility with what you are connecting, and charging the cells while still inverting.

If you do want other parts email us so we can help - we can quote based on what we have at the time. For battery solutions we can provide a lot of flexibility from the many types we stock. We can also build the battery bank and wiring system but charge for this.
The outputs of the UPS cannot be tied together. If you have two units working side by side they must power separate devices, you cannot link two UPS together to combine their power. They cannot be grid tied. Several past customers have used different units for different sections of their house - one for the entertainment room, one for the lighting etc - all drawing from a single battery bank. Can be used in rack (flat) orientateion, or on its side, but make sure to have adequate cooling and airflow.
The UPS are all fully tested before sending though. If there is damage in transit we will cover those problems.
All of our consignments are sent fully insured on a 24 hour service with our carriers. We cover all problems that occur in transit. We can ship to the EU (transit time varies) and have experience packing and shipping to overseas destinations. In normal circumstances We will dispatch on the day ordered (pre midday). We have the packing materials to make sure that there are no problems in transit. Our warehouse is based in the UK. VAT is included in the buy it now price, and if you are VAT registered you will be able to reclaim this. We send VAT invoices as PDF's via email - please request this if you need it. If ordered before 3PM you should expect the item next working day under normal circumstances.
