    Hi
we have a gate that has an electric motor to open it.
When the power goes out we cant get into or off our drive and its annoying. You can use a spanner to wind it back but its not good.
    Can a UPS help?
The electrical sticker on the motor looks like this

I hope so as I'm tired of being trapped in my house

thank you for sending the sticker. We se 220V and 220W on the spec plate (~1A)
we've sold UPS for use on gates before, and also motors in general.

We have learned that you need to give a large overhead margin of max power on the UPS to cover inrush.

Inrush is when the motor is surging in energy the first instants after it is activated. It is higher when the motor is larger, with more mass, and a thicker winding. Its always much higher than the nominal / continuous running figure.

    Here is the Wikipedia article

I think a 2200VA UPS would be a good start - something like SUA2200i. Presuming its going out of the way and condition is not top priority I'll link the option that has no lower front plastic and is cheap.

outside of the above which is my official rating, you could try going for a smaller UPS - but its a bit of buy and try and you might not have success. Look for UPS that are heavy as this means they will have a large transformer, which gives some inrush protection. This might do the trick

If you have time, please post back here with your experiences to give other people an insight.

    Thank you.
We'll think about it, but I'm considering going for larger UPS because I could put a light and a camera system on it.
