SMX2200HV Faulty State Battery Overtemp

Hi

A SMX2200HV I bought second hand 3 years ago has started displaying a Faulty State Battery Overtemp error. It also has an extra battery attached to it. I tried restarting the UPS and disconnecting the batteries but made no difference. The cupboard it is in is a little warm, but not hot enough to warrant an overtemp in my mind. Also, the UPS and batteries do not feel warm to touch and the fans rarely spin, suggesting perhaps a faulty sensor?

Is there anything else worth trying or should I simply replace it? Happy to replace it and then dig around and try and change a sensor if that's an option to repair it for another site.

A couple of side questions:
- The extra SMX120BP battery is around 3 years old, I bought it new second hand, ie unused but kept in storage for a while. The UPS overall has had a 6% load over the years. Will I still get any life from this battery or best to also replace?

- I have a AP9617 network card I purchased form UPS trader that is installed in the SMX2200HV, a IP seems to be leased to it by the router, but it's unresponsive when I try and access it in the browser and the network settings do not appear in the UPS advanced mode config menu either. Also the router logs show "BOOTP from dynamic client and no dynamic leases". Is this something you've come across? Could it related to the faulty battery causing the UPS to give up on everything else too?

Howdy
Are the cell trays hot? Get them out of the UPS and EBM and check.

Noting the cells must be at least 3 years old, and probably much older, I think they are goosed.

Plan
Replace the cells in your UPS (SMX2200HV (4u) takes RBC143 type)
Disconnect the EBM
See if the UPS is happy with that.
If so, order another couple of RBC143, rebuild the EBM, reconnect it and perform a full discharge / recharge test with a load you dont mind dropping (heater / halogen lights)

If the UPS is unhappy still, order another UPS from us, and a second RBC143 for your EBM. The UPS and EBM take the same cell types.

If you dont want to spend time testing the existing UPS as you need the solution now, order 1x UPS and 2x RBC143 and we'll ship them out ASAP.

Lost my earlier reply somehow. I may do away with the extra battery soon, so I'm going to order another SMX2200HV which I need at another site anyway, and use the battery from that to test. I'll probably then order spare batteries to fix it.

Howdy, this is a sensible plan.
With new cells in the replacement unit, you might find that you get more runtime than you are used to even with the EBM as the cells were old and degraded.

Using the pack with new batteries from a fresh order to test the second UPS is good thinking.

Hey NB, one other question. To test, I'll disconnect the EBM and then hot swap the battery tray in the live SMX2200HV with the ones from the SMX2200HV i've ordered. If the battery is the issue will the UPS stop complaining about the overtemp immediately or are there other steps I'll need to do for it to reset? Thanks!

Hi

I'd power down the UPS, pull the cell out and replace it so you start from an inert state.
Give it a few hours before deciding if the UPS is OK or not. Perhaps a week.

You could always order a core from us, but its best to try to get it right first time
