I need advice on selecting a UPS for my home office. I experience frequent power outages in my area; lasting anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
My setup includes a desktop computer; a monitor, a Wi-Fi router, and a small NAS device. I have noticed that these outages are sometimes accompanied by voltage fluctuations; which has me concerned about potential damage to my equipment over time.
The runtime question is reflective - you can cover for days if you have the need and the budget, but I think resource and cost wise you are most sensible to cover the major inconveniences, the short outages, and when you get larger ones be aware that you have a certain amount of time, but the budget means the UPS will not last for ever.
I dont know your load leve, budget, or brand preference. I'll presume a home office using less than 500W max, and for runtime purposes, 200W nominal.
I'll link APC UPS that have AVR which covers the voltage reguilation req.
At my desk I have one of the SUA1000i, one of my favorite UPS. Quiet, small, cheap, reliable - whats not to like.
if you want to get bigger and with a longer support time, this SUA2200i tower (which is without front, so not perfect condition, I'm not sure if thats going to bother you or not)
Its about twice as dear, but would have a 3 hour runtime at 200W and can support a much higher load of 1600W if you decided you wanted to put other devices on it.
Last thing to note - you can control your runtime somewhat. Example, you have a power failure, and the runtime with all your gear on is 40 minutes. After 10 minutes power is not restored, but you want to keep your wifi router on for a long time. Shut down your PC and turn off the other devices apart from the router - this then runs at a low draw level and the UPS supplies power for much longer - potentially hours if its like our router.
I think this gives a good start - I'm happy to take your thoughts and questions
